What Are Some Ways I Can Help Protect My Online Reputation?

Protect Your Online Reputation in 5 Simple Steps

We have all seen how fast word travels nowadays, and nowhere is that more significant to your small business than in the world of your online reputation. What took you several years to build can be shattered in seconds. If you are not up to speed on why exactly your online reputation matters so much, let’s consider a few statistics. Cone Communications has found that a full 89 percent of consumers view online channels as trustworthy sources, and that 80 percent have actually changed their decision about purchasing after viewing a negative review. Not just that, but your own social media accounts is where the action is! The Society for Communications Research tells us that another 72 percent report researching companies through their social channels before making purchasing decisions, and 59% use these same social sites to let the world know about their frustrations about you and your customer service.

5 Ways to help guard your online reputation

  1. Check your online reputation regularly – Google yourself and your company name at the very least once per month. Setup Google alerts to inform you if there are any mentions of your names or brand. Easy, free and necessary.
  2. Claim your online property – Someone who is intent on doing you or your business harm can do a lot with your name. Ensure that you buy your company’s domain name, as well as your personal one, and avoid at the very least having them show up in Google thanks to an exact match name.
  3. Be active on your social networks – Beyond claiming your presence on the major social sites, also work to use them regularly. Being involved can help you see and minimize potential issues easily.
  4. Deal with damaging content ASAP – Deal with negative postings and especially complaints without delay. Do your very best to get hold of the person directly, preferably offline. Attempt to handle their issues, and whatever you do, don’t enter into a shouting match online.
  5. Be conscious of what you post – Use your head when posting. If this may come back and bite you or your business later, don’t post it. Those lovely pictures of you and the crew tying one on in in the strip joint are best left out of your online world.

We are all part of an instant information-driven world. Make sure you are in position to use this to effectively manage your online reputation!
